Billy Burroughs

Billy Burroughs, the heart of Burroughs Bees Apiary, began his beekeeping journey two years ago when his daughter, Bethany, gifted him a community college beekeeping class for Christmas. What started as a thoughtful gesture grew into a shared passion for sustainable beekeeping.

Billy's Story

Billy Burroughs founder of Burroughs’ Bees, has been active in agriculture his entire life.  In 2022 while attending the Charles County Fair, Billy stopped by the beekeeping display in the Farm and Garden building.  After talking with a representative from the Association of Southern Maryland Beekeepers, Billy and his daughter, Bethany decided to enroll in a beekeeping class offered at the College of Southern Maryland.  At the conclusion of the course, he made the decision to start keeping bees both at his home and on his family’s farm in Southern Maryland.  In the spring of 2023, he started with two nucleolus colonies he purchased from Diane Wellons, a local Beekeeper who also serves as his mentor.  In the fall of 2023, Billy and Bethany enrolled and completed the 2nd year course, “Beyond the Basics” to further their knowledge of beekeeping. His apiary continues to grow and thrive with help from his family and mentor.

Billy is an active member of the Association of Southern Maryland Beekeepers and a member of the Maryland State Beekeepers Association.
